raku

1997 was the beginning of raku's activity on the underground romanian hip hop scene. he had several featurings until 2002, when his solo album came out under the label of facem records. his talent brought him several other relevant inputs on hip hop compilations and albums, invitations at online radio shows and ... fame! check him out on www.raku.ro

borgore

one thing you can't ignore is borgore, praised by many as the future of dubstep in the form of his unique fusion of vocals over his relentless basslines to create a sound which was coined by his fans as “gore-step”. borgore went on to become an internet sensation clocking up over 1 million youtube hits and over twenty thousand fans on facebook, so it’s no surprise the ice cream EP hit the number one slot on Beatport, Juno and chemical records with both digital and vinyl sales.

it's obvious you know everything you need to know since he's comin' back to romania after just a few months...

well. let's keep it simple. 'lovely' artist, performing in the 'sweet' area of dubstep, known for his 'soft' and 'touching' lyrics. i say... FILTH. and it's well said.

misterX

xsound, bucuresti

mister x (aka misteriX, aka domnu X), from bucharest, has entered the video art scene of his city in 2005, with projections at numerous events, especially on the drum and bass and breakcore music scene. the most profound influences in his visuals are deeply rooted in surrealism and postmodernism. the abstract video-painting processes and the chaos of video-photo collages are combining to produce a spectacular result, always having a central and meaningful element. his vj work is divided into two steps: the pre-event one and the one during the event. The work before the event is about concept, filming and raw cuts. the work during the event consists in mixing the raw images and further developing the initial concept. this means combining in a controlled chaotic way elements that in the end suit perfectly the original idea. the raw filming before the event, which can look bad to the untrained eye, is not representative to the concept and only after adequate mixing all the pieces fall into place. so his method is one that requires taking little steps in the dark while visioning only the final result. since 2007 mister X has worked on a permanent base with UpperCUT. their most important joint venture is XsoUnd, a multimedia project that combines the digital technology with traditional methods, obsolete, for playing sound and image. the keyword of the project is diversity: starting with the media for images and music (gramophone, analogue tube TV sets, boom box, iPhone, chaos pad, etc..) to the musical styles covered, that trace a small modern history of the sound. thus, XsoUnd could mean anything from jazz to noise, from IDM to classical music or from dusbtep to fiddler music, each song coming as a total surprise.

dj
food

not yet classified among the 'regular' music genres, dj food has conserved his ecletic sounds eversince he started representing the label ninja tune. his fans appreciate his innovative manner in music and the fact that dj food is not here for the first time makes us smile at the thought that our country was a reason for a come-back! for those not yet familiar with his style, get to know him over myspace or his webpage: http://www.djfood.org/djfood/

dj food - the present: strictly kev

with over 25 years DJing experience and more than a decade serving up Food for DJs, for both Ninja and Coldcut's weekly radio show 'Solid Steel', kev is now in the Food hot seat.
he first met Matt Black at his 'Telepathic Fish' ambient parties of the early 90's, started designing artwork for Ninja Tune and paired up with PC (Patrick Carpenter) to form the public 'face' of DJ Food on 4 decks in clubs around the world. after working on various Food and Coldcut related studio projects with PC (A Recipe for Disaster, Journeys by DJ, ColdKrushCuts and the Blech mix compilations for Warp) they released the album 'kaleidoscope' in 2000, closely followed by the 'quadraplex EP' in 2001.
also arriving in 2001 was the first in a series of Solid Steel mix CDs starting with DJ food & DK (Darren Knott - Solid Steel's producer) and the publicly lauded ' now, listen'. since then he's been constantly art-directing the Ninja Tune label, designing for artists like amon tobin, the herbaliser, DJ vadim and funki porcini. mix work has included a rescore of the Monkees' cult film 'Head', an as-yet unreleased album of vintage Sesame Street funk, and his magnum opus 'Raiding the 20th Century'. this last hour-long mix/documentary was an internet-only release charting the history of the cut-up and featured journalist Paul Morley reading from his book 'words & music'. not only did it crash servers on several sites that hosted it due to its initial popularity but it was later subject to a cease & desist order from EMI for multiple infringements of copyright.
in 2007, alongside DK again, he followed up their Solid Steel debut with the sequel - 'Now, Listen Again' - and the pair spent much of 2008 transferring their mix into a 4 deck audio visual live show. using Serato's video plug-in - that enables video to be mixed and scratched via turntables the same as records - they christened their efforts 'video turntablism'.

kev is now working on a series of EPs that will make up the next DJ Food album, an exhaustive DJ food website (www.djfood.org) and providing artwork for Ninja artists such as King Cannibal and the forthcoming 20 year label celebrations.

DJ food – the past:
DJ food has been many persons, of who we will come to in a moment. DJ FOOD is best described as Food for DJs, simple as that, just flip it around and it begins to mean something entirely different.
Originally produced by Coldcut the DJ food project started in 1990 with the release of ‘jazz brakes’; ‘jazz brakes volume 3’ being the label's most successful early album. not only are they effective collections of breaks, loops and samples ideal for mixing, remixing and producing - but also fine collections of funky jazz & hip hop tunes, that cut it just as well on the discerning dancefloor as in the safety of your own home...
since the growth of the abstract hip hop scene in ecent years the jazz brakes albums have proved to be ahead of their time. jazz brakes volumes 4 & 5, co-created with DJ/producer PC, are collections of finely crafted tunes that transcend the breakbeat compilation format to stand as artist albums in their own right. these latter DJ Food albums have developed with shades of latin, dub, techno, ambient, tribal, african and jungle flavouring the funk.
the october '95 album entitled 'a recipe for disaster' was a conscious break from the five jazz brakes volumes to form more of an identity as an artist, and a remix album of tracks from all 6 LPs 'refried food' was released feb '96.

but who makes this food then?
matt black & jonathan more (aka Coldcut) were responsible for starting the DJ FOOD series of jazz brakes back in the early 90's, and along the way they met Patrick Carpenter (PC) who was commonly misconstrued as the computer that they made the tracks on for a while. a loose collaborative team began to form as more like-minded people arrived at the party; paul brook, paul rabiger, strictly kev and issac elliston to name a few.
whilst keeping their hand in as DJs, matt & jon couldn't and didn't want to DJ twice in one night under both aliases of Coldcut & Food so PC & strictly stepped up to represent the Food club-wise. This was the score for some time, until PC became so busy with his involvement in the cinematic orchestra that he decided to depart to concentrate on that, leaving strictly kev to carry the mantle.
kev plays out regularly, travelling all over the world and creating a stir wherever he goes. he is amazingly versatile, both in the variety of tunes and his skills on the decks, playing a mix of jazzy, funky breaks, bootlegs, hip hop and usually building the set to a drum & bass crescendo that has the crowd going nuts.

The man is a joy to watch and great fun to dance along to – look on ye mighty DJs and despair!

gojira

we proudly present one of the few experimental, idm, electronica and break beat djs in romania - impersonated by gojira, student at the medical school in bucharest - who started off at 16 as a musician and is now one of the most requested, respected, and yet discrete and elegant appearance among djs. only few information can be found about him online - sooner from his online tv projects like greenchannel or happyfish rather than mixes. you can get familiar with his profile on http://www.beatfactor.ro/artisti/Gojira-24776-l-1

dj
hype

dj hype made himself  a sort of a synonim to dnb, currently influenced by jungle and dub. under the record label real playaz, uk has a strong representative in this musical area throughout dj hype - if you don't know what we mean, see his awards, collaborations and experience online on www.djhypehypehype.co.uk, together with some more info that you might find useful, as they say.

essentially hype is to drum and bass as afrika bambaata was to the development of hip-hop. he first became involved in music through the legendary Shut Up and Dance sound system, like many before him his interest growing from physically building the speakers that made up the rig to DJ'ing, spinning reggae, house and hip hop throughout the eighties. as time passed, his skills behind the turntable grew to the extent of winning the london heat of the 1989 DMC's and going on to represent britain in the european championships."

while continuing to play at high capacity events hype also made the move into radio, becoming involved with influential pirate station fantasy FM before taking up a position at Kiss FM - his Sunday night sessions some of the most popular and securing him best male DJ and best radio DJ at subsequent hardcore awards."
his time in the studio began at Kickin', co-producing The Scientist's seminal 'exorcist' and 'the bee' before laying down tracks for a number of other labels - the most notable of which, suburban base, saw him compiling the still highly sought after 'drum and bass selection' series in addition to notching up his own underground smashes in the form of 'trooper' and 'shot in the dark' while touching upon the charts with 'isotonic' on FFRR."

with substantial success, it was only a matter of time before hype established his own label Ganja in 1993 working closely with fellow ex-suburban base artist and friend pascal. 'cops' opened up the play for his Ganja imprint which was later to feature 'ganja man' and zinc's legendary 'super sharp shooter,' before peaking with the 'still smokin' album, a collaborative effort with pascal's frontline records. perhaps surprisingly considering the subsequent runaway success of the label, the intention was never specific, as hype explains."
'Ganja Records was never meant to be anything, I was never planning on building anything from it, and it was just a knock up as I wanted a label to put some tunes on. as the label built itself without me really having to do anything I realised that if I did choose to put some effort into something I could build something really strong. I'd been encouraging zinc to do his own thing for some time, though since he didn't really want to be out on his own - myself, zinc and pascal decided to set up a label as a collective.'

having flirted with major's in the form of a deal with RCA/Parousia as Ganja Crew in 1997, the threesome backed out of renewing their options choosing instead to retain their independence through establishing their own True Playaz. hype explains his philosophy. 'there are two things which keep me going. firstly, I haven't got anything else - this is it for me so I've got to keep it going - I look at what I have and music has got me everything in my life as well as enabling me to help my family. secondly I see the enthusiasm for this music from people all over the world.

this year alone we've dj'd all over the world; spain, canada, switzerland, estonia and we know that the whole planet wants it. When you've evolved with something and become part of it on a level where you know that there is such a love for it - it becomes something very special to you. to think five years ago no one could have ever have contemplated that this music would be where it is now. the day I'm playing out and the audience doesn't like it anymore I'll probably move onto something else.'
